About

My academic background is Artificial Intelligence, specifically those subfields known to practitioners as Heuristic Search and AI Planning. Persons interested in a copy of my résumé can find one here.

I obtained my undergraduate and doctoral degrees from The Australian National University. While there, I was fortunate to work under the guidance of Dr. Philip Kilby, Dr. Alban Grastien and Dr. Adi Botea. In my doctoral thesis I studied a family of related computational problems that are referred to (often interchangeably) as pathfinding, path planning or (more simply) routing. Particular highlights from my work in this area:

  • I am the co-developer of the popular Jump Point Search pathfinding system.
  • I am the co-developer of SRC-dfs; the fastest pathfinding system at the 2014 Grid-based Path Planning Competition.

Having a rather applied bent, I am also fascinated with problems arising in the context of Transportation and Logistics. Some examples of the type of work I do in this area:

  • Rail scheduling and capacity analysis of rail supply chains.
  • Simulation-based analysis of rail and port operations.
  • Data-driven efficacy analysis; e.g. of flight pairing and pilot rostering systems.
  • Delivery truck fleet optimisation.
